Michel’s Marinade & Pikliz

Can you please tell us a little bit about your products.

Our products are Michel’s Marinade & Pikliz (spicy slaw). The marinade is what we call in, Haitian Creole, epis. It is universal for marinating meats, seafood, poultry, or could also be used as a base when making sauces. Michel’s Pikliz is traditionally used in Haiti’s national dish of griot(fried pork) & bannan peze (fried pressed plantains) but it can be used to accompany other dishes or eaten by itself.

Who are the players behind Michel’s?

My wife, Cynthia Eugene-Joseph & I, are the founders/owners of Michel’s Catering & Events as well as Michel’s Marinade and Pikliz.

What is the most challenging thing about the food manufacturing business?

The most challenging thing is introducing the cultural aspect of the products outside of the Haitian community. Our products are influenced by our Haitian heritage that we proudly want to share with the world. As Haiti is truly the Pearl of the Antilles and rich with a food culture as well.

When did you launch Michel’s brand?

Cynthia & I launched Michel’s Catering & Events in April 2016. This was a leap of faith as I walked away from my 9-5 a few months prior. Our vision from the beginning was to allow our Haitian culture to shine via our food and products. We are humbled for what the future holds.

Where can we find your products?

Our goal is to have Michel’s products starting with Michel’s Marinade and Pikliz on shelves worldwide. For now, we are taking pre-orders via the IG & Facebook business pages @MichelsCateringEvents or Michel’s Catering & Events. Products are made fresh & shipped within 5-7 business days.

Why the name Michel’s?

We chose Michel’s because it represents our family. Michel is Cynthia’s late grandmother’s family name who passed away when she was pregnant and due to give birth. We honor her memory including Michel in my daughter’s name. My wife being my rock and catalyst deserves double honor. 

How many employees do you have?

Currently, my wife & I are the main employees but when we’ve got events booked we’ll bring in servers, prep cooks, or people to help her with the event design/decor. We like to ensure that every event gets Michel’s experience.
